CHELSEA IN UNWANTED FA CUP HISTORY

West London giants Chelsea have made an unwanted history in the FA Cup after they were beaten by Premier League rivals Liverpool in the latest FA Cup final. Chelsea were beaten 6-5 on penalties after they played out a goalless draw with the Reds at the end of 120 minutes thus becoming the first team to lose three consecutive FA Cup finals.

The sequence of losing FA Cup finals began for Chelsea when they were beaten by London rivals Arsenal. The Gunners came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 during the 2020 FA Cup final. American star Christian Pulisic gave Chelsea the lead before Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalised for the Gunners from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta. Aubameyang then scored the winner in the second half to seal a 14th FA Cup title for Arsenal thereby extending their record over Manchester United. The Red Devils are the second most successful team in the FA Cup with 12 titles. Chelsea finished the aforementioned final against Arsenal with ten men after Mateo Kovacic was sent off for two yellow cards in the second half. Club legend Frank Lampard was the Chelsea manager during that final.

Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Leicester City in the FA Cup final last season thus making it two FA Cup final defeats in a row. Belgian international star Youri Tielemans was the recipient of the winning goal from long range in the second half. It was the first FA Cup final for Thomas Tuchel who replaced club legend Lampard four months earlier.
Tuchel qualified for his second FA Cup final in two seasons by beating London club Crystal Palace in the semifinals, but the German tactician is still waiting for his first FA Cup title after the penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool.
